Mrs. Esta Spaulding Smith

Greensboro - Esta Spaulding Smith, age 76, went courageously to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 15, 2010 surrounded by her loving family.

A Celebration of Esta's life will take place on Saturday, July 31 at 11:00 am at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, in Greensboro. The family will receive family and friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following her Life Celebration.

Esta was born January 27, 1934 in Ashe County to the late Austin and Lavon Spaulding of Fleetwood in which many of her friends and relatives still reside in West Jefferson, NC.

Esta left the Blue Ridge Mountains after high school and moved to Siler City, NC. There she met the love of her life, Gerald Smith. They married in 1956 and settled in Greensboro, NC. Esta was a devoted wife, mother, and friend to many. She lived selflessly for her family and had many talents and gifts. She loved to cook, sew, and cultivate many types of flowers in her gardens where you could always catch her cutting fresh flowers. Her favorite past time was playing a weekly game of bridge with her dear friends. Esta loved to walk and surround herself in nature’s beauty and could name all types of plants and flowers. She was quick to welcome new neighbors to the community with homemade pies and pound cakes. She loved to make people smile and always kept a positive attitude. She never complained and was generous with her time around the community. We miss Esta dearly, but there is comfort and solace in recalling the many memories she blessed us with. She truly brought the gift of happiness and joy to each of our lives.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, Gerald Smith, two daughters, Robbin and Janice Smith, both of Greensboro: two sisters: Trema (Paul) Carroll, and Dara (Jimmy) Eddins both from Pittsboro, NC; two brothers, Conrad (Patti) Spaulding of Cocoa, Florida, and Ed (Kim) Spaulding of Pinehurst, NC, her loyal and trusty dog Buffy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Forsyth Regional Cancer Center for their friendly and professional treatment during the past five years. Special thanks we also send to Oncologist Dr. Charles Pippitt, Dorothy Kozar NP, and Brenda Mickey, RN. They were always friendly, compassionate, caring, and very professional. The family was also blessed to have the services of Hospice in Greensboro, NC. From our first day to the last, Esta's every need was met. We especially thank Dr. Rita Layson, Primary Care Nurse Ericka Cox and Chaplain Chris Morris. Their special attention and care for Esta provided her with the dignity, respect, and quality of life that made her transition to her new Spiritual life very meaningful.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, NC 27455 or Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
